The tough outer fabric called "three-wire panama" is very durable, hard-wearing, comfortable and practical. The durable natural fibers become more comfortable with each wash. A water-repellent TeflontTM coating provides the necessary weather protection and is not affected by light rain.

Panama fabrics are usually flat, coarse fabrics that are extremely robust and tear-resistant. The more densely woven the fabric, the more durable it is and the stiffer its structure. Despite their robustness, Panama fabrics are breathable and air-permeable. A major advantage of the fabric comes into play here: Panama fabrics have little tendency to wrinkle and are pleasantly crease-resistant. If you don't like ironing, you can look forward to it.

Another typical feature of Panama fabrics is that they have the same look and structure on the left and right side of the fabric. However, it is not the material that is characteristic of Panama, but the type of weave. This is why we also speak of a Panama bond. This is a variant of the typical plain weave. During weaving, the weft thread is passed alternately above and below the warp thread, so that a cube-shaped or checkerboard-like structure is created. With classic plain weave, a weft thread alternates with a warp thread. Panama fabrics are woven in such a way that several weft and warp threads are woven in parallel.
